You are giving a presentation to a new staff member in the diabetic clinic. Discuss the first stages of diabetes mellitus type II (insulin resistance) as well as two oral hypoglycaemic drugs in a total of less than 700 words.
Sub-question A (4 points):
Briefly explain insulin resistance, giving examples of how this ‘resistance’ occurs.
Sub-question B (3 points):
Discuss a specific sulphonylurea including its mechanism of action and the most important side effects and contraindications. Make sure you include information about what would you say to the client about the main side effect to make sure they can safely deal with it if it occurs, and the type of diabetic you would not give the medication to.
Sub-question C (3 points):
Discuss a specific biguanide with respect to its mechanisms of action and the most important indications, side effects and contraindications. Make sure you discuss the appropriate measurement that will decrease the likelihood of the most important adverse effect.
