The concept of professional accountability is to accept responsibility of your decisions when providing care. Professional accountability pertains to nursing because it ensures that you’re working within your scope of practice, its developing trust with your patients, it ensures that you are following rules and regulations and it provides safety. The way accountability is viewed to myself is that if something goes wrong, for instance if my patient expires, I am fine with taking accountability because I know I didn’t make an error that resulted in that outcome. Examples of how a nurse demonstrates professional accountability is staying within the scope of practice, using the nursing process to guide care as well as evidenced based practice. The best way to express professional accountability is to follow the rules and regulations. The best way that I myself incorporate self-care including mental health is by taking time for myself to sit in silence and self-reflect. During that time if I think of something that causes me agitation or anxiety, I meditate but if I am at peace with my thoughts, the silence is amazing. Spiritually I talk to my higher power, not everyone has the same religion or express religion, I believe in God, and I call him the man upstairs. I do not only run to him when I need him but daily, I reach out to him. For my patients, if they are upset, I get them to engage in breathing exercises that I do with them. For my patients spiritually, I ask them if they believe in a higher power and if so, I encourage them to pray about their worries. I always say, “I don’t have all the answers, but he does”. Self-care includes rest, Mark 6:31 states “Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” This scripture represents that God believed it was important to eat and rest. The bible mentions a lot of times to protect God’s temple as in our body and what not to do to destroy it. Another scripture that I feel like has a powerful symbolism of self-care is Corinthians 3:17.
