As an MSN professional nurse, you may find yourself in a situation where you need to create the right impression or gain the attention of an influential peer, another member of an interprofessional team, or a potential employer. You need to be able to quickly introduce yourself as a professional nurse or describe your professional identity.
Through this brief introduction of your professional identity called an elevator pitch, you should gain the attention of your target person or audience and then clearly and concisely describe your professional identity, your role, your values and beliefs, and your specialty.
Scenario
Imagine you are recruited to a new team of healthcare professionals in your future MSN role. You need to prepare a brief video to introduce yourself professionally and highlight your strengths at contributing to the success of a team.
Prompt
Record a short video to create your elevator pitch. Use the content you developed in Project Three as a basis to describe your professional self. Remember that your elevator pitch is distinct from your personal philosophy of nursing and should provide a concise summary of your professional identity rather than a detailed holistic view.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
Professional Details: Describe your professional details and evolution to your MSN role. Articulate who you are as a professional nurse. Be sure to include your name in your introduction, then address the following questions in your response.
- What is your role and specialty?
- How long have you been a nurse?
- What is your professional evolution?
Values: Explain the nursing values that guide your practice. Remember to refer to the values you explored previously in this course. Think about how you would briefly explain this to a peer in the healthcare field. They may not necessarily be a nurse but would be another team member within an interprofessional team.
Skills: Describe your specific skills that will benefit an interprofessional team. As you respond, consider how you have contributed to a team in your current professional practice. Then direct your thinking to where you are going in your future education and post-MSN work. Be sure to include your contributions both interpersonally and technically or practically. Only discuss the skills you feel are your strongest. An incomplete list of topic ideas has been provided, though you may have your own.
- Interpersonal skills: Collaboration, communication, cooperation, cultural competence, or leadership
- Technical or practical skills: Project work you have completed, specific systems or software you have used, or specialty-specific skills
