Case Scenario for the Concept Map
Kristy, a 15-month-old girl, arrives with her mother at a GP clinic in a semi-rural district with a high fever (38.9ºC) that has persisted for more than 24 hours. Kristy has been extremely irritable, according to her mother and has a petechiae rash on her lower extremities that does not fade when pressure is applied, which was noticed at Kristy’s day-care centre this morning.

Kristy vomits during the examination, and her hands/feet are cold to the touch with a prolonged capillary refill. Kristy’s mother reveals that her daughter has received no vaccinations since her birth. Kristy is transported to the nearest tertiary Emergency Department immediately with suspected meningitis.

After arriving at the hospital, Kristy is diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis, due to Neisseria meningitidis.

The single-page, color-coded concept map should include: • An interpretation of ALL of the patient risk factors (from the case-study scenario) and a demonstration of how these risk factors correlate and relate to the aetiology and/or pathophysiology of the diagnosed disease/disorder, utilising evidence-based literature. • A step-by-step pathophysiological sequence between the aetiology of the identified disease/disorder and ALL of the patient’s clinical symptoms (from the case-study scenario) using evidence-based literature.
