Part I: Reading Assignment: Husted, G. L., Husted, J. H., Scotto,.

Part I: Reading Assignment:
Husted, G. L., Husted, J. H., Scotto, Carrie J., Wolf, K.M. (2015). Bioethical Decision Making in Nursing, 5th edition (e-book) Read Chapters 1 and 2
Reflection on readings:
Reflect on the following statement on page 27:
“A nurse is the agent of her patient, doing for her patient what he would do for himself if he were able.”

Part II: Reading Assignment:
Read the ANA Code of Ethics with interpretive statements parts I and II.
These documents provide examples and interpretations to The Code, and serve as a guide for
nurses and nursing students.
Reflection on reading:
In reading these two documents (ANA Code I and II) and Chapters one and two, and reflect on your past and present nursing experiences, and consider if you have been challenged by any of the 9 ethical provisions.

Review the two “Reflections on reading,” and then share an example of an ethical dilemma you have experienced in practice.
Refer to the ANA Code of Ethics and identify which provision best aligns with your example of an ethical dilemma.
Consider the term symphonology, and the standards of autonomy, freedom, beneficence, and fidelity (page 9): Were any of these standards a component of the dilemma?
Refer to page 17, and consider the “power” healthcare providers have over their patients. Was this a consideration in your experience?
