According to Leonard (2022), S.M.A.R.T. goals are a framework of five aspects that act as a tool to develop a practical pathway for accomplishing a specific purpose. The five aspects of SMART goals: are specification, measurability, achievability, relevance, and timelines. All five elements are required to effectively achieve the desired end goal and be defined as a S.M.A.R.T. goal. The benefits of S.M.A.R.T. goals include providing clarity, objectivity, and motivation. The article states that while S.M.A.R.T. goals are challenging and push participants outside their comfort zone of problem-solving, the objective should be attainable. In addition, S.M.A.R.T tools effectively motivate project participants by clarifying the purpose and providing a pathway to the end goal (Leonard, 2022).
Martins (2022) states that S.M.A.R.T. goals transform vague ideas into actionable, obtainable goals. S.M.A.R.T. goals build a clear path that visualizes the end goal by clarifying specific objectives and having an element of measurability. Additionally, S.M.A.R.T. goals are challenging but achievable, meaning the goals should be realistic. As a result, S.M.A.R.T. goals are well-defined, falsifiable, and attainable. The benefits of S.M.A.R.T. are clear communication, team alignment and motivation, clarity of path toward project success, a clear roadmap, and the end goal with trackable metrics. Finally, the author recommends that if a S.M.A.R.T. goal is not achieved, it should be viewed as a learning process instead of viewing the project as a failure.
